Terms of Service

Last updated 6 October 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and the person who runs Shadowbox Studio. Please read them before you create an account. If you are a consumer, nothing in them takes away rights that the law where you live gives you and that can't be waived by contract.

1. Who we are

Shadowbox Studio ("the Service", "we", "us") is run by [set SHADOWBOX_LEGAL_NAME], a private individual and not a company, at the address in the legal notice. You can reach us at [set SHADOWBOX_LEGAL_EMAIL].

2. What the Service does

Shadowbox Studio is an online tool. You upload vector artwork (an SVG file), choose settings, and the Service calculates the panels of a laser-cut lamp box whose shadow reproduces your artwork. It shows a simulated preview, checks the parts for likely manufacturing problems, and, on plans that include downloads, lets you download cut files (for example LightBurn projects and SVG files).

We may improve, change or remove features over time. If we remove something central to a paid plan during a period you have already paid for, you can cancel and get a refund for the unused part of that period.

3. Your account

  • You must be at least 16 years old to create an account, and an adult (18, or the age of majority where you live) to buy a paid plan.
  • Give a real e-mail address you can read. We use it to identify your account and to contact you about it.
  • Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account unless it was used without your fault, for example because of a security failure on our side.
  • One person per account. Don't share an account or resell access to it.

4. Plans, prices and payment

The Free plan costs nothing and has a daily limit on generations. It is for designing and previewing: downloading cut files needs a paid plan. Paid plans add downloads and raise or remove the daily limit. Current plans, limits and prices are shown on the pricing section of the website.

While online payment is not yet available, choosing a paid plan only records your request. Nothing is charged and no paid contract is formed until we confirm it with you by e-mail and you pay.

Once online payment is available, the following applies to paid plans:

  • Subscription. A paid plan is a subscription that renews automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly unless the order page says otherwise) until you cancel.
  • Price shown before you pay. The order page shows the total price, including any VAT or sales tax that applies where you live, the billing period, and that the plan renews.
  • Payment provider. Payments are handled by a third-party payment provider named on the order page. We never see or store your full card details. If that provider acts as the seller of record (the "merchant of record"), it is the party that sells to you and issues your invoice, and its own terms also apply to the payment.
  • Cancelling. You can cancel at any time, effective at the end of the period you have paid for.
  • Refunds. A payment is refundable within 14 days only if you haven't generated a design since making it. Once you generate a design on a paid plan, the payment for that period is final, and if you are an EU, EEA or UK consumer, you lose your right of withdrawal at that point, as you agree when you pay. See Refunds and cancellation, which is part of these terms.
  • Price changes. We will tell you about a price increase by e-mail at least 30 days before it applies to you. It takes effect from your next renewal after that notice. If you don't agree, cancel before then.
  • Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, your account moves to the Free plan until payment succeeds. Your account and designs are not deleted.

5. Your artwork and your files

Your artwork stays yours. You keep all rights in the SVG files you upload. You give us only the permission we need to run the Service for you: to receive your file, process it on our server and send you the results. We don't use your artwork for anything else, we don't publish it, and we don't keep it after the generation has finished (see the Privacy Policy).

Your output is yours to use. You may use the cut files and previews the Service produces for any lawful purpose, including making and selling lamps, as long as you have the rights to the artwork they are based on. You may not redistribute the cut files as a way of offering the Service itself to others (for example, a file pack built to replace using the Service).

Only upload what you're allowed to use. You confirm that you own the artwork you upload or have permission to use it in this way, and that it doesn't infringe anyone else's copyright, trademark or other rights. We may remove access for anyone who repeatedly uploads infringing material. If you believe someone has used the Service to infringe your rights, write to [set SHADOWBOX_LEGAL_EMAIL].

6. Fair use

Please don't:

  • try to access other people's accounts, the server, or parts of the Service you aren't given access to;
  • overload the Service, get around the plan limits, or access it with scripts or bots other than the website itself;
  • copy, decompile or reverse-engineer the generator, or use the Service to build a competing product;
  • upload malicious files or content that is illegal where you or we are.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules. Unless the problem is serious or urgent, we will warn you first and give you a chance to fix it.

7. Making the lamp safely

The Service gives you design files. The cutting, building and use of the lamp are in your hands, and you are responsible for doing them safely and in line with the rules that apply to you. In particular:

  • Laser cutters can start fires and produce harmful fumes. Follow your machine's safety instructions, never leave a cut unattended, and ventilate properly.
  • The preview is a computer simulation. The real shadow and the strength of the parts depend on your material, laser settings, kerf, assembly and light source, and can differ from the preview. Test-cut before cutting in volume.
  • Use only a low-heat light source (such as an LED) suited to an enclosed wooden box, wired by someone competent, and don't leave it unattended for long periods.
  • If you sell lamps made from the files, you are the manufacturer of those lamps and responsible for their safety, labelling and legal compliance (for example CE/UKCA marking or local electrical rules).

8. Our rights

The Service, its software, the generator, the website and the example designs belong to us. These terms give you a personal, non-exclusive right to use the Service while your account is active. They don't transfer any of our rights to you.

9. Availability

Shadowbox Studio is run by one person. We aim to keep it available but can't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and it may be offline for maintenance. Saved projects keep your SVG and settings, but we can't promise they will never be lost: keep your own copy of your artwork, and download the cut files you need.

10. Our responsibility to you

If you are a consumer in the EU, the UK or another country with similar rules, you have statutory rights when digital content or a digital service doesn't match what was promised. Those rights are not limited by these terms. If something is wrong, tell us and we will fix it, or, where the law provides for it, reduce the price or refund you.

Otherwise, and as far as the law allows, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranty that it is fit for a particular purpose, that the files will cut or assemble as previewed, or that it will be free of errors.

Limits on liability. We are fully liable, without any limit, for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, for harm we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, and for anything else where the law does not allow liability to be limited. Apart from that:

  • we are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable, or for lost profits, lost business or lost data, where you use the Service for business purposes;
  • we are not liable for damage caused by how you cut, build, use or sell a lamp, including fire and damage to your laser, material or premises, unless it was caused by our breach of these terms;
  • our total liability to you for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose and (b) 50 euros.

11. Ending the agreement

You can stop using the Service at any time and ask us to delete your account by writing to [set SHADOWBOX_LEGAL_EMAIL]. If you have a paid plan, cancel it first (see Refunds and cancellation).

We can end the agreement with at least 30 days' notice by e-mail, for example if we close the Service. If we do, we refund any unused part of a period you've paid for. We can end it immediately if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when payments go live, when the law changes, or when we add features. We will tell you about important changes by e-mail at least 30 days before they apply to you. If you don't agree, you can cancel before the change takes effect, and a paid plan will be refunded for any unused part of the period. The version you accepted when you signed up is recorded with your account.

13. Law, courts and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of [set SHADOWBOX_LEGAL_COUNTRY]. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in the courts there.

If you have a complaint, write to [set SHADOWBOX_LEGAL_EMAIL] first. We'll answer within 14 days and try to sort it out. We are not obliged to, and do not, take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.

14. General

  • If a court finds part of these terms invalid, the rest still applies.
  • If we don't enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
  • We may transfer this agreement to someone who takes over the Service (for example a company we set up to run it). We will tell you, and it won't reduce your rights. You can cancel if you don't agree.
  • These terms, together with the Refunds and cancellation policy, are the whole agreement between us about the Service. The Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.
